We installed the fireplace in this remarkable owner-designed house. Because the room was already filled with ornate textures, including the wonderful Majolica pottery made by the owner, we limited the fireplace design to using only architectural elements. The corbels that make up the cantilevered hearth and the arched surround are reminiscent of the muqarnas that are ubiquitous throughout the Islamic world.
